RIDBC has four specialised preschools that enrol children with hearing impairment, based at:
- Sydney (North Rocks)
- The RIDBC Rockie Woofit Preschool for children learning to listen and talk
- The RIDBC Roberta Reid Preschool for children learning Auslan (Australian Sign Language)
- Penrith
- Newcastle.
These preschools provide innovative programs for children with hearing impairment aged 3-5 years.
Three of them (RIDBC Rockie Woofit Preschool, RIDBC Nepean Preschool and RIDBC Hunter Preschool) are reverse integration preschools. This means they also enrol children from local communities, without hearing impairment. These children are able to act as language and play models for their peers.
Families play a strong part in children’s preschool education. Family members are welcome to be part of the program at any time.

The program
The programs at RIDBC preschools are designed to foster children’s social and emotional development, and to enhance their initiative, self-esteem and independence.
It provides a broad range of first-hand experiences to enable children to develop an awareness and understanding of the world.
Language development is a priority, and activities like reading, storytelling and drama are emphasised.
Parents are recognised as an integral part of the preschool program and are kept up-to-date with their child’s progress. Families enrich the program by sharing special skills, interests and knowledge with the children.
The preschools maintain a high ratio of staff to students.
Preschool support
As part of the Early Learning Program, RIDBC also supports mainstream preschools in metropolitan Sydney that have enrolled a child with hearing impairment.
Our specialist teaching staff visit preschools, providing staff and parents with advice on the best way to assist children.
