Many of the factors that cause sensory impairment can also cause other impairments. These include:
- Diseases like meningitis
- Syndromes that cause developmental disabilities (such as Down Syndrome)
- Birth trauma, particularly for premature babies
In addition, it can be difficult to recognise early signs of illness or disability among children with multiple disabilities, which can result in permanent sensory impairment (for example, middle ear infections left untreated). For more information see:
